Executive Departments

United States Cabinet as of July 26, 2012. Source- The White House

The US government is a very large institution, governing over 300 million people, collecting $2.381 trillion in taxes, and spending over $3.552 trillion. The government has many executive departments to run different parts of the country- from managing the money supply to defending our country. You can read all about the major executive departments, plus important or notable independent agencies, right in this section of How the Government Works.

Note: The side graph titles for the interactive graphs currently say that expenditures are in billions of dollars. We meant millions of dollars. We are working to correct this issue.
