Located entirely inside Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, Stephen C. Foster State Park offers visitors several ways to explore the unique ecosystem of the Okefenokee Swamp. The abundant wildlife in the park includes alligators, turtles, raccoons, black bears, deer, ibis, herons, wood storks, and red-cockaded woodpeckers. Visitors can walk on a boardwalk which goes through the swamp, fish in the nearby Billy Lake, take boat tours of the swamp, or look at exhibits in the Museum. Located in the northeast corner of Georgia, the centerpiece of the this state park is the 1,000-foot deep, 2-mile long Tullalah Gorge, which is considered to be one of the most spectacular canyons in the eastern United States. Visitors to the park can hike or bike along the rim of the canyon, browse exhibits at the Jane Hurt Yarn Interpretive Center, swim, fish, go whitewater paddling, or walk a suspension bridge which crosses the canyon 80 feet above its bottom. The park has 50 campsites, a gift shop, picnic shelters, and tennis courts. Fort Mountain State Park is located on the 2,851-foot Fort Mountain, which is named for an ancient 885 foot long rock wall located on its peak. While not much about this wall is known, it is thought to have been built by early Indians as a fortification. Other theories suggest that it was built by Hernando De Soto's Conquistadors, or was used for ancient ceremonies. Elsewhere, visitors can explore a 50-foot stone fire tower built by the CCC, hike on the park's 14 miles of trails, or fish and swim in Fort Mountain Lake. The park has 80 campsites, 15 cottages, 10-walk in campsites, and 6 platform campsites. Other State Parks in Georgia A.H.
