Anza-Borrego Desert

Anza-Borrego State Park, with 600,000 acres, takes up one-fifth of San Diego County and is the second largest state park in the continental United States, after Adirondack Park in New York. The state park has 500 miles of dirt roads, 12 designated wilderness areas, and 110 miles of hiking trails which provide visitors endless opportunities to explore the wonders of the California Desert. The park features alluvial fans, rock formations, colorful badlands, vast arid landscapes, dramatic mountains, natural springs and oases, and desert washes. Wildflowers are plentiful in the park from February to April. Other flora in the park includes cacti, ocotillo, smoke trees, catclaw, oak trees, manzanitas, and velvet mesquite. Foxes, deer, coyotes, roadrunners, golden eagles, desert bighorn sheep, and black-tailed jackrabbits are among the types of fauna that can be found within the park. Anza-Borrego State Park has 60 species of mammals, 225 birds, and 60 reptiles and amphibians. The park has visitor center with information and maps, and interpretive displays. The park also has 194 campsites.

Humboldt Redwoods

The third largest state park in California, Humboldt Redwoods State Park has 23,600 acres of old-growth forest, of which 17,000 acres are old-growth redwoods. The park is located off the scenic U.S. Route 101 in northern California. The park is famous for its Coastal Redwoods, and is home to 100 out of 137 of known trees over 300 feet, including the 4th tallest living Redwood in the world, the Stratosphere Giant (112.94 meters). The three tallest Redwoods in the world are located in the nearby Redwood National Park. Visitors to the park can experience the park's 100+ miles of trails by horse, foot, or bike, take the 32-mile Avenue of the Giants tour, and go fishing, boating, and swimming in the South Fork Eel River. The park has over 250 campsites in 3 different campgrounds, a visitor center which has a theater, displays, exhibits, and a bookstore.

Mount Tamalpais
Mill Valley, California
Created in 1963

Located north of the Bay Area, Mount Tamalpais State Park contains redwood groves and oak woodlands, with the namesake 2,500-foot mountain covering 25,000 acres. The state park surrounds Muir Woods National Mounument, famous for its tall Coastal Redwood trees. The view from the summit of Mount Tamalpais is a spectacular one-- on a clear day one can see the entire Bay Area, Marin County, the Farallon Islands, and sometimes even the Sierra Nevada Mountains, which are 150 miles away. The park has about 60 miles of hiking trails, picnic areas, a railroad museum, visitor center, and the Crushing Memorial Amphitheatre, which was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. There are 16 campsites and 10 cabins in the park.
